Grammar 911

Before I get to this week’s blog post, I want to take a moment to thank everyone that is reading my blog. I know your time is valuable, and I am honored you are choosing to share it with me.

Yesterday, I was talking with a friend about her distaste for writing. She recently graduated, with a Bachelor degree, from a local university. She enjoyed learning her field of study, but struggled when it came to writing assignments. At one point in our conversation, she made the statement, “The English language is complicated.”

I have to agree.

If English is not your first language or you have trouble grasping grammar rules, writing can be very difficult. In fact, even grammar fans, like me, can still struggle with paragraph structures and misplaced modifiers. If you don’t believe me, ask my college professor Dr. Wadia (one of my favorite professors in the English department at Austin Peay State University). Thankfully, he equipped his students with a wonderful tool that I am going to share with you.

Enter – GRAMMAR GIRL

Mignon Fogarty, better known as Grammar Girl, is a whiz at grammar, and she has made it her life mission to help struggling writers everywhere improve their skills.

I had never heard of her before Dr. Wadia’s class, but I have become a fan of her work. She has written several outstanding books, one of which I own – The Ultimate Writing Guide for Students. In addition, she has many interesting podcasts that you can listen to online or download through iTunes.

IMG_4258smallOf course, Fogarty is not the only author in the grammar field. However, I think her books are a good choice for anyone who wants to improve their writing skills. I know her book and podcasts helped me.

Happy Writing!
