I had a serious internal debate concerning what to write about for this week’s blog post. Should I talk about the topic we are all sick of hearing about, the presidential race, or should I choose a “safer” piece?
Tonight, I am throwing caution to the wind. If you are offended, I hope you take the time to ask yourself why and to examine if there is any truth to what I am presenting. It is not my intent to force my opinion on you, or offend you, but to give you something to consider. Don’t worry, I will not be discussing candidates or their qualifications.
Here we go…
I don’t know about you, but I am really tired of hearing about our current presidential election. The news, social media, and radio are flooded with facts and opinions about the two main candidates. Everywhere you turn, someone is talking about the debates, candidates, and issues.
We, the American public, have paid with our citizenship for front-row seats to watch grown men and women act anything but civil. We were once a nation of hope, but we are morphing into an embarrassment. Real freedom has been replaced with a poor imitation that is slowly killing us from the inside out. Our nation is dying, and we are blaming the other political party or government as a whole.
This blog post is not so much about my distaste for our current political process, but a plea for each of us to examine our own parts in this melodrama. We helped cause the unfolding madness. We are part of the problem. We have treated men as gods and expected them to fix our own human depravity. It is not our neighbor that is messed up; it is us.
We pawn our mistakes on future generations and teach them conflicting moral standards. We model rebellion toward authority. We talk about and treat others, especially different ethnic groups and members of the opposite sex, like they are less valuable. We refuse to admit our own ignorance and tell them to follow an example that we seldom reach toward, let alone achieve.
We scream about tolerance but hold back love, as if it is a finite resource. We mistreat our elderly, poor, unborn, and disabled while expecting to be treated like royalty in the marketplace. We celebrate unjust violence and murder on our television and video game screens. Our nation is confused about the basic concepts of marriage, money, identity, and purity. The list goes on and on.
Then, at each election we place our mess – bad attitudes, poor money management, and lack of self-control to name a few – on governmental shoulders that are ill-equipped to hold the weight. We put our trust in men and women, believing they will be the President, Congress, or Supreme Court with all of the answers. They will turn our country around.
Here is the unfiltered truth as I see it – Our nation has drifted so far off course that no earthly government could possibly correct it.
The answer will not come from this election. In my opinion, it must come from divine intervention, and we would be wise to pray for it. We need some humility. We need to “take a knee” and acknowledge that God is our greatest and only hope. Then, let’s start taking responsibility for our part and encourage others to do the same. We need to start being the change we want, and we need take back the voice we gave away when we stopped realizing the enemy was in us. We need to allow our government officials to do their jobs and not expect them to be our saviors.
If we want a better nation and government, then we need to be a better people who puts their trust in what works.
I am ready for this boxing round to be over. November 9th can’t come soon enough!
If you made it to the bottom of this post, I want to thank you for taking the time to read it. I know this entry was a bolder one that might not have been as palatable, but I wanted to be true to my inner voice by sharing what is in my heart.
See you next week!
Good!
