Four months ago, my husband and I decided to purchase chickens. You wouldn’t know it to look at them, but those cute furry chicks you buy at the store require a large amount of time, patience, and care to survive. It was a “first time” experience that has proven both exciting and exhausting. We have often questioned whether the time, money, and effort were really worth it.
I am happy to report that we finally got our answer.
This week, we received the ultimate chicken reward- some eggs.
We have waited patiently for “the girls,” as we affectionately call them, to begin laying eggs, and we were exhilarated to find two little eggs in one of our nesting boxes. I wish I could say that I made the initial discovery, but our second oldest daughter stumbled upon the first egg while the rest of us were out of town. Fortunately, this did not curb my enthusiasm; I felt like a kid on Christmas morning when I saw the eggs for the first time.
I know, it probably seems strange to be excited over eggs, especially when you can go to the store and buy a dozen for less than $2. However, these eggs make our struggle worth it. They represent many hours of research and hard work. These two little eggs prove that we have what it takes to raise healthy, happy, egg laying chickens.
Although it is not my ultimate life accomplishment, getting eggs from our chicken feels pretty good.
It won’t be long until all of our chickens are laying, and we will have plenty of eggs to share.
Congratulations, Sweet and Sour, on a job well done!
Thanks for letting me have the new eggs. It is so sweet to see you excited about your chicks laying eggs. Please continue to share your heart and adventure with us. It is fun and delightful to read.
